How to Buy a Gun Online in Ohio
This guide explains how to buy a gun online in Ohio. The firearm ships to a licensed dealer you choose in the state, and the federal paperwork and background check happen at pickup. The sections below cover the ordering steps, the Ohio rules that apply, the regional topics this site covers, and answers to common questions.
How ordering online and shipping to a local dealer works
You place your order here and choose a licensed dealer (FFL) in Ohio to receive it. Handguns, rifles and shotguns ship to that dealer, not to your home. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship to your door, and an adult signature may be required on delivery.
When your firearm arrives, you visit the dealer you picked and show a government photo ID. You complete federal Form 4473 and pass a NICS background check. Under federal rules, a dealer sells handguns to buyers 21 and older, and rifles and shotguns to buyers 18 and older.

What the Ohio rules say
Ohio has no permit to purchase, no firearm registration and no state waiting period. Ohio Revised Code 9.68 preempts local gun ordinances, so the buying rules in your city match the rules in the rest of the state. Private sales between Ohio residents need no background check, but you may never hand a gun to someone you know is prohibited.
Ohio has permitless carry. Senate Bill 215 took effect in June 2022. A qualifying adult, meaning a person 21 or older who is not barred from having a handgun under Ohio or federal law, may carry a concealed handgun without a licence. The concealed handgun licence is still issued by the county sheriff in your county. Many people keep one because it is honoured in a long list of other states.
Ohio no longer requires you to volunteer that you are armed, but you must say so if an officer asks during a stop. The off-limits list in ORC 2923.126 still applies everywhere in the state.
For hunting, Ohio runs one statewide deer season structure and sets bag limits county by county. For 2026-27, the statewide archery season runs from Sept. 26, 2026 through Feb. 7, 2027. Youth gun season is Nov. 21-22, deer-gun week is Nov. 30 through Dec. 6, a bonus gun weekend follows on Dec. 19-20, and muzzleloader season is Jan. 2-5, 2027.
The calibre rules for hunting guns are specific. Shotguns from 10 gauge down to .410 firing one slug are allowed. Muzzleloaders must be .38 calibre or larger. Handguns must use straight-walled cartridges of .357 magnum or larger. Rifles must be chambered for straight-walled cartridges from .357 to .515 and hold three rounds at most.
Cities and regions this guide covers
The fact file for this guide does not name specific cities, so the regional topics are listed below.
- Metro areas: Inside city limits, discharge ordinances and a lack of public land matter more than the calibre rule. Most metro hunters drive to a state wildlife area.
- Deer hunting in your county: A straight-walled cartridge rifle in .350 Legend, .360 Buckhammer, .44 Magnum or .45-70 falls inside Ohio's .357 to .515 window. Keep the magazine and chamber to three rounds combined.
- Waterfowl: Ducks and geese require an Ohio hunting licence, the state wetlands habitat stamp and a federal duck stamp. Use non-toxic shot and plug a shotgun to three shells.
- Feral hogs: Ohio has no established feral hog hunting. Report scattered sightings to the Division of Wildlife.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to buy a gun in your city?
No. Ohio has no permit to purchase and no state registry. You show ID, fill in Form 4473 and pass a NICS check at the dealer who receives your order.
Do I need a licence to carry concealed in your county?
No, if you are a qualifying adult 21 or older who may lawfully have a handgun. The county sheriff still issues the concealed handgun licence for people who want it for travel to other states.

Deer-gun week runs Nov. 30 through Dec. 6, 2026, with a bonus weekend on Dec. 19-20. The bag limit depends on your county, so check the current Ohio hunting regulations before you buy tags.
